Symptoms of hyperactivity, when<br \/>\npresent, are almost always evident by the age of 7, although they may be present<br \/>\nin preschool children. Attention deficit may not be apparent until the child reaches<br \/>\nelementary school.<\/p>\n<p>The three main types of ADHD include the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMBINED TYPE<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is the most common type and is characterized by impulsive and hyperactive<br \/>\nbehaviors, as well as inattention and distraction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPULSIVE\/HYPERACTIVE TYPE<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is the least common type and is characterized by impulsive and hyperactive<br \/>\nbehaviors without inattention or distraction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INATTENTIVE TYPE OR ADD<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is predominantly characterized by inattention and distraction without<br \/>\nhyperactivity.<\/p>\n<p>Boys and girls can display very different ADD\/ADHD symptoms, which may<br \/>\nexplain why boys are three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than<br \/>\ngirls.<\/p>\n<p>The symptoms of <strong>boys<\/strong> with ADHD are more obvious and external. On the<br \/>\ncontrary, in <strong>girls<\/strong>, they are less evident, with less action and more isolation from<br \/>\nsocial situations and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boys<\/strong> with ADHD tend to display the symptoms most people think of when they<br \/>\nimagine ADHD:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Impulsivity or bad behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Hyperactivity (running, hitting, inability to sit still).<\/li>\n<li>Lack of concentration, lack of attention.<\/li>\n<li>Physical aggression.<\/li>\n<li>Talking excessively, frequently interrupting other people&#8217;s conversations and<br \/>\nactivities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, the symptoms in <strong>girls<\/strong> with ADHD are generally not the &#8220;typical&#8221; ones<br \/>\nand may not be as obvious as in boys. These symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Isolation.<\/li>\n<li>Low self-esteem.<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>Problems in academic performance.<\/li>\n<li>Lack of attention or tendency to &#8220;daydream&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Trouble concentrating.<\/li>\n<li>Appearance of not listening.<\/li>\n<li>Being the target of verbal aggression, such as teasing or insults.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All this leads us to place a clear emphasis on the need to be clear about these<br \/>\ndifferences when considering a diagnosis and, in conclusion, we could state that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Girls<\/strong> tend to experience ADHD differently than boys.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Girls<\/strong> are less likely to be hyperactive, with the inattentive type being the most<br \/>\ncommon; therefore, its symptoms may go unnoticed.<\/li>\n<li>ADHD is just as common in <strong>boys<\/strong> as in <strong>girls<\/strong>, but it is diagnosed less often in<br \/>\ngirls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder (DSM-5), generally diagnosed for the first time in childhood (although the diagnosis is increasing among adults), characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity.
