Anxiety is more than being nervous. It is an irrational, unreal and excessive fear or worry, and daily life becomes a constant concern. Therefore, anxiety ends up dominating the individual’s life, which negatively affects their normal functioning in different areas of their lives, such as social activities, work or interpersonal relationships. In addition to this, generalized anxiety disorder affects the ability to vividly imagine possible future situations, causing attention to focus more on the negative sensations that are perceived in the present.

Following the diagnostic criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-V, anxiety and worry are associated with three (or more) of the following six symptoms.
1. Nervousness, restlessness or feeling overwhelmed
2. Get tired without having made efforts to justify it
3. Problems to concentrate
4. Irritability
5. Muscular tension
6. Sleep disorders (complexity to conciliate or maintain sleep, sleep little or restless)
In addition to this, anxiety, worry or physical symptoms cause clinically significant discomfort or deterioration in social, occupational, or other essential areas of functioning.
